VICTORY – Fresh Vision OP

The Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission targeted a small community organization that had existed for years and demanded that they release all of their donors based on minor candidate mailings. Given the impact on core political speech and chilling implications, the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission was forced to dismiss this action with prejudice after the firm heavily litigated the case.

In 2024 and 2025, CLDF attorneys partnered with the Institute for Free Speech to obtain a permanent injunction against the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission regarding the enforcement of the state’s “political committee” definition. As a result of this lawsuit, the Kansas legislature passed an updated definition of “political committee” in the Campaign Finance Act that aligns with First Amendment case law and vastly expands First Amendment protections in Kansas.
